Bob appeared at my office with a desire to upgrade his smile. Over the last few years, the wear and tear of life was impacting his teeth. He felt this was interfering with his career as a featured reporter for Fox News KTVU/Channel 2, Segment 2. With the chipping and wear of his teeth, he was holding back a smile that would show his teeth.
After his new patient interview and exam, I discovered there were several orthopedic issues going on that were contributing to the extensive wear and tear on his teeth. Through the years, Bob’s bite had collapsed resulting in shortening of the lower face. Though Bob’s physiological adaptation was good, several years ago, he began noticing biofunctional/neuromuscular symptoms of ringing in the ears and headaches when awaking in the morning. After several medical evaluations, nothing was found wrong medically. Bob accepted that this was a normal part of aging and did his best to adapt to the changes.
Fortunately, Bob’s gum and bone support was solid, so together we discussed a plan to recapture the proper jaw/tooth relationship as well as give him a smile that will feel comfortable grinning from ear to ear. I recommended using an aesthetic biofunctional approach that would involve more than just Bob’s teeth. It is the full encasement of happy face muscles, smooth facial lines, relaxed countenance and a radiant smile that says, “I am having a great face day!”
Once the aesthetic neuromuscular diagnosis was completed, Bob had a choice between orthodontics and/or aesthetic reconstruction using high-tech ceramic procedures to rebuild the teeth. Bob felt orthodontics was not an option due to his professional profile, so he chose the reconstruction approach.
Bob’s smile makeover took four appointments. The first appointment involved preparing the teeth, records and placing attractive provisional restorations. I use the upper teeth provisional restorations as a prototype to determine shape and color to visualize the outcome of the final restorations. The lower teeth provisionals were designed to build up the bite and measure Bob’s response to increasing the lower face height and decompression of the joint.
Bob’s response to the provisional attempt was excellent. He liked the way they looked. The next week he used them on the camera set. People were commenting about “a positive difference,” but yet they were not sure what it was. Bob also experienced an immediate relief from head pain and the ringing in his ears began to subside. With this thumbs-up experience, we designed the upper final restorations.
Bob is now happy to report to the set, with his best feature outstanding. As he said to me, “This physical improvement is one of the best things I have done for myself. I am so happy I did it.” Others say he looks fifteen years younger. I will have to agree. Bob is now free of head pain and the ringing in the ears is completely gone. This gradual response took about 4 months, and his healing is complete. I recently heard Bob say, “It is now hard to remember the last time I had head pain and ringing in the ears.”
Another side benefit Bob has experienced in a straightening of his neck posture. This is a common occurrence when the upper neuromuscular systems balance is corrected. (Facelift Without Surgery and Relieving Head and Neck Pain) There are over 100 muscles associated with the lower jaw function. When these muscles are relaxed and stabilized with a balanced bite, I often see improved posture.
